One of the game's greatest

One of the reasons I got my MasterClass subscription was the unprecedented access to Phil Ivey's game and mindset when it comes to poker.

Phil Ivey is one of those players that always had this certain mystique surrounding his play-style. What thoughts went through his head as he rendered another bluff onto an oblivious opponent? This MasterClass goes through some of these legendary hands and offers you, whether as a novice or a professional, a rare look into the mind of one of the greatest poker players around.

I consciously made a decision to enjoy it. [...] I don't wanna be like that, where it's never enough.

- Phil Ivey, on being conscious of the joy in the game when winning.

Phil Ivey has an aura of mystique surrounding him. Famous for his intense, pensive stare, Ivey was a wunderkind from a young age. Learn his journey. Phil Ivey is one of the legends of the game. A ten-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner, Ivey has had his share of success. Ivey is a master of No Limit Hold 'em, yet funnily enough, none of his bracelets are in Hold 'em. (He does hold some in mixed games)

A short glance at Ivey's Hendon Mob Profile shows that he has had ample success in No Limit Hold 'em as well.

Ivey is also famous for not shying away from the online High Roller cashgames on Full Tilt Poker in its heydays. He played the likes of Durrr, Isildur, Patrik Antonius and Gus Hansen for millions of dollars, and has had his share of success there as well. The game he mostly played there is Pot Limit Omaha.

There a plenty of hands of his uploaded to YouTube, but it's more insightful when you hear Ivey comment his own hands. On MasterClass he shows both the good and the bad, allowing himself for learning moments when the cards -- or his mindset -- drifted from the ideal position.

Take a look at the journey Phil takes you on:

  1. Pre-flop and blind defense;

  2. Betting, flop, turn and river: three-betting, overbetting, bluffing and other tactics;

  3. Deepstack play;

  4. Other areas, important on and off the table, like the mental mindset;

  5. Table Image and Tells;

  6. Strategies for success;

  7. And a bonus chapter, on the game that kindled Phil's love for poker.

All the while discussing his own televised hands, the ones where the pots were bountiful, but also those where he got owned himself. Of course, it's mostly him torturing his opponents.

Phil talks about betting strategies, the importance of position, bluffing, and getting paid on your bets. He discusses tournament strategy, cashgame strategy and 7 Card Stud in another bonus lesson, all the while using his own played hands as examples. And he also confronts his own mistakes, aiding you in preventing from making the same mistakes.

But the one thing that MasterClass has to offer, is what many of his opponents, cringing, trying to get out from under Phil's domination is this: access to his mind.
